The Naked Island/1960/Japan

FiC Rating 5/5
Dir: Kaneto Shindo
Why FiC Recommends?
1) Kaneto Shindo’s poetic musing stows the universal anxiety surrounding our future into the bleak documentation of a family’s agrarian life and ceaseless struggle to survive in the Setonaikai archipelago against nature’s wrath.
2) The universality of the context and the relatability of the human condition displayed transcends the barriers of language in a nonchalant way and Shindo had stripped it off of any sorts of cinematic sensationalism.
3) It is the transparent honesty and minute detailing that rids The Naked Island off of any poetic romanticism, a common genre trope for slow cinema, rather it’s palpability hits harder than one might expect.
